Major General James B. Mallory III was commissioned a Second Lieutenant from Washington & Lee University with a Bachelors of Arts degree in political science. Upon graduation from the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Major General Mallory served on active duty with the 82d Airborne Division as a Rifle, Weapons, and Recon platoon leader, and finally as the Division G-3 Training Readiness Officer.
Major General Mallory began his Army Reserve career in 1981 concurrent with attending law school at Wake Forest University. Past assignments in the 108th Division (Institutional Training) include Training Company Commander in 2nd Battalion 485th Regiment, Training Officer in 3rd Brigade (IN-OSUT), G-3 Training Officer in Division Headquarters, S3 of 2nd Brigade (IN-OSUT), 108th Division Assistant G-3, Commander of 1st Battalion 518th Regiment, S-3 and Executive Officer of 3rd Brigade (CS), Brigade Commander of 1st Brigade (BCT), 108th Division Assistant Division Commander (Support), the 108th Division’s Assistant Division Commander (Operations), Commander 108th Division (IT), and finally as Commanding General 108th Training Command (IET). The 108th Training Command is the sole nationwide reserve command for initial military training, representing one half of the total basic training capacity of the United States Army.
Major General Mallory is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, the United States Army Command and General Staff Officer Course, the Defense Strategy Course, the United States Army War College, and is a member of the Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee.
His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion Of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, the Master Parachutists Badge, Pathfinder Badge, and the Expert Infantryman Badge.
In his civilian career, Major General Mallory is an attorney in Statesville, North Carolina
Major General Mallory is married to the former Mary Sherrill of Statesville, North Carolina. They have four children – Bryan, McLain, Madison, and Will.
